Permit Sonoma updates permit time limits to align with state law
SANTA ROSA, CA | July 01, 2025
Effective August 1st, 2025 Permit Sonoma is updating its time limits for permits to comply with recent changes in California state law. Under the new policy, issued permits may now expire if work does not begin within 12 months or if there is a 12-month lapse in progress. Permit Sonoma previously had a three-year permit term to complete the project. Recent state legislation now mandates a 12-month timeframe statewide.
“While we previously had flexibility in setting permit time limits, state law now requires a uniform approach,” said Nathan Quarles, Sonoma County’s chief building official. “We are updating our permitting system and directing staff to implement these changes to ensure consistency with state law.”
Permit holders should take note of the new 12-month timeframe and plan accordingly to avoid permit expiration. Updates will be reflected in Permit Sonoma’s online permitting system, and staff will be available to answer any questions regarding this transition.
